It all started with The Sims 1: A house I couldn’t keep

My story with building started somewhere around 2002, two years after The Sims 1 came out. I was just a kid back then, growing up in a family that didn’t have much. A computer was a dream, not something I could actually touch.

At first, I played The Sims only when my parents took me along to visit their friends.
Usually, their friends had kids – older than me – and they had computers.
Sometimes, they even let me play! That’s how I first saw The Sims 1.

It hit me like magic.

I don’t remember the first house I built, but I remember the first one that stayed with me. It was huge, odd-shaped, with diagonal walls and some kind of wild animal-patterned wallpaper on the outside. There was a massive garden and two swimming pools.
I was proud of it! It was so messy, a little bit strange and just mine.

But I didn’t get to keep it.

My parents were ready to leave, and next time we visited… it was gone. The girl who owned the computer had deleted it. She wanted to build her own house – on the same world, same lot I used. And that was that. I didn’t say anything. I just… stopped talking to her, haha. 😀

Sometimes I’d still get to watch others play, and honestly, I loved that too. I’d sit there, commenting every move, imagining my own stories, waiting for my turn that never came but I was still happy.

Eventually, my parents bought a computer. Someone helped me install a cracked copy of The Sims: Unleashed. At the time, I didn’t even know where to buy games – and even if I did, we couldn’t afford them. The whole system was pirated. But I had what I needed!

I could build without asking. Without losing anything. 😀

And just like that – in 2004 – The Sims 2 appeared on the horizon.
A new beginning. A new way to create.

(To be continued…)
